Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Northport Owner’s Guide

A Gelco chimney cap installed in Northport typically runs $380 to $720 depending on flue count, cap size, and whether your crown needs repair before mounting. We stock the common Gelco galvanized and stainless-steel models for single and multi-flue chimneys, and most replacements in Northport are completed in one visit. If you’re seeing rust streaks, water in the firebox, or animals on the roof, the cap is usually the first thing we check.

Most Northport homeowners don’t think about their chimney cap until something goes wrong. Russell Haines and our crew have replaced hundreds of these across the older homes near Northport Harbor and the tree-lined streets off Laurel Hill Road. The Gelco line is popular here because it fits the masonry dimensions common to 1960s and 1970s colonials without custom fabrication. When a cap fails, water gets in, creosote accelerates, and squirrels treat your flue like a highway. We’d rather catch it early.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco makes chimney caps in series that correspond to flue count and mounting style. The most common we see in Northport are the single-flue Gelco Model C (clamp-mount for terra cotta flue tiles) and the multi-flue Gelco Model A (leg-mount to the crown surface). Both come in galvanized steel, stainless steel, and copper finishes. The stainless models carry a lifetime warranty against rust-through, which matters on Long Island where salt air from the Sound speeds corrosion.

To identify your cap, look for a stamped model letter on the underside of the lid or a small Gelco tag on one of the legs. Measure your flue tile outside dimensions if the tag is gone. The Model C fits flue tiles from 8″ x 8″ up to 13″ x 13″; the Model A multi-flue covers need at least 5″ of flat crown surface on all sides for the legs to seat properly. Here’s where Northport owners get tripped up: older homes with poured concrete crowns often have rounded or sloped edges that won’t accept a leg-mount Model A without a custom base plate. We fabricate those in our shop, but it changes the price and the timeline.

We install OEM Gelco caps and quality aftermarket equivalents from Olympia Chimney and Copperfield. The aftermarket units match Gelco specs exactly and carry comparable warranties. We don’t use builder-grade substitutes. Hearthstone Chimney Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Gelco.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Is Failing

  • Rust stains running down the chimney face. Gelco galvanized caps begin showing surface rust at the weld points after 8 to 12 years in Northport’s climate. Once rust breaches the seam, water follows. We see this most often on north-facing chimneys where the cap stays damp.
  • Water in the firebox or a musty smell after rain. The cap’s mesh screen or lid has separated from the frame, or the storm collar has lifted. Sometimes the cap is intact but was never properly flashed to the flue tile, a shortcut we find on older installations.
  • Animals or nesting debris visible from below. The mesh sides of a Gelco cap are 5/8″ woven stainless. Squirrels can bend weakened mesh, and raccoons will pry at loose corners. A cap that once kept them out becomes an entry point once the frame fatigues.
  • The cap is tilting, missing, or rattling in wind. Clamp-mount Model C caps rely on tension screws gripping the flue tile. Freeze-thaw cycles in Northport winters loosen these over time. A tilted cap channels water directly into the flue instead of away from it.
  • Smoke backup on windy days. The cap’s lid has deformed or the clearance between lid and mesh is clogged with creosote. Gelco caps are designed with specific draft dynamics; a dented or soot-choked cap chokes your fireplace performance.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range in Northport
Single-flue Gelco cap, galvanized, installed $380 - $480
Single-flue Gelco cap, stainless steel, installed $520 - $640
Multi-flue Gelco Model A, stainless, installed $580 - $720
Crown repair or leveling (if needed for mounting) $180 - $340 additional
Custom base plate for sloped crown $120 - $200 additional

What drives the range: flue count, cap material, and crown condition. Every installation includes removal and disposal of the old cap, a Level-2 camera inspection of the flue interior so you see what we see, proper sealing of the new mounting, and our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice. No surprises.

We don’t recommend a cap without showing you the crown and flue condition first. If the crown is cracked or the flue tile is spalling, a new cap is putting a lid on a deeper problem. We’ll tell you plainly what can wait and what can’t.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s no high-tension danger in swapping a chimney cap, but there’s plenty of ways to do it wrong. An owner can safely check whether the cap is loose, measure flue dimensions from inside the fireplace with a flashlight, and look for rust or animal damage from the ground with binoculars. What we don’t recommend: climbing a roof to wrestle with a corroded clamp, guessing at crown slope, or installing a cap without inspecting the flue beneath it.

The common DIY mistakes we fix in Northport: caps mounted too low and clogging with creosote, wrong mesh size for your appliance type, and no storm collar or sealant so water runs behind the cap. A cap that looks right but leaks is worse than no cap at all, because you stop watching for the problem. If you want it done once, call (631) 528-2501. We’ll be there when we say.
