A Hearthstone company - serving Northport, NY

Meet the Team - Hearthstone Chimney Co.

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Meet the Northport Team Behind Hearthstone Chimney Co.

We’re the crew that shows up at your door in Northport, uniformed and ready to work. Some of us grew up sweeping chimneys on these same streets; others came to the trade later and found we liked the honesty of it. What ties us together is simple: we treat your house like we’d treat our own mother’s. Russell Haines set that tone when he founded this company back in 1984, and it’s still how we operate today.

Our People

Russell Haines, Owner

I’ve been climbing roofs and peering down flues since 1984, when I started Hearthstone Chimney Co. with a brush, a ladder, and the belief that Northport homeowners deserved straight answers about their chimneys. I’m CSIA-certified and still take on fieldwork when a job needs extra hands or an experienced eye. My version of a joke is usually just pointing out that I’ve seen enough cracked crowns to know every house on the North Shore has its own personality. When I’m not on a roof, I’m probably at the shop making sure our materials meet the standard I’d want in my own home.

Jim D., Lead Technician

Jim’s been with us fourteen years and knows the flue systems in Eatons Neck, Asharoken, and Fort Salonga better than most people know their own basements. He’s CSIA-certified and specializes in Level-2 camera inspections, the kind where we send photos to your phone and walk you through what you’re looking at. Jim’s the one who’ll tell you if a liner can wait another season or if it’s time to stop using the fireplace until we fix it. Off the clock, he restores vintage motorcycles in a garage that’s somehow always cleaner than his living room.

Maria S., Senior Installer

Maria came to us from commercial HVAC work and took to chimney systems like she’d been waiting for something with more craft to it. She’s our go-to for liner installations using DuraFlex and Olympia Chimney products, and she’s particularly good at the tricky retrofits you find in the older colonials around Northport village. She holds NFI certification for gas appliances and won’t sign off on a job until she’s tested every joint herself. Her three kids have learned to identify chimney caps from the car window, which she considers a parenting win.

Derek T., Service Coordinator

Derek answers the phones and keeps the schedule straight, which in a town where half the chimneys were built before 1950 is no small task. He’s the live voice you get when you call (631) 528-2501 at 10 PM on a Saturday because you smelled something odd after the first fire of the season. Derek grew up in Kings Park, knows the local permit offices by first name, and can tell you whether your neighborhood tends toward clay flue tile or the poured pumice liners common in 1970s builds. He keeps a fishing rod in his truck for the rare slow afternoon on the Northport waterfront.

Ana K., Apprentice

Ana’s in her second year with us, learning the trade from the ground up, literally. She started on the ground crew, hauling gear and learning to read a flue from the bottom before we let her on a ladder. She’s already certified in chimney fire safety and spends her Fridays in the shop studying for her CSIA exam. Ana’s detail-oriented in a way that makes her excellent at crown rebuilds with HeatShield and Gelco materials. She lives in Commack and claims the commute is worth it for the bagels at Canterbury’s in Northport, which the rest of us have started using as a meeting spot.

One Standard, Every Job

We’re part of a network that covers fifteen communities across Long Island, but the standard doesn’t change when you cross town lines. Every technician here carries the same 90-Day Done Right Promise, backed in writing with no arguing. The K.E.Y.S. code, Russell’s framework from day one, governs how we work: Krafted right, Every time, Your home first, Standing behind it.

That means the same DuraFlex liners, the same HeatShield crown applications, the same camera inspection protocols whether we’re in Northport or our farthest service area. Most jobs wrap in a single visit because our trucks carry what we need and our people know what they’re doing. The price we quote is the price on the invoice. No surprises, no callbacks for paperwork, no voicemail when you need us.

We’ve been at this for over 42 years. We plan to be here for 30 more. That changes how you treat every customer.
