Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation: The Northport Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Copperfield-compatible chimney caps across Northport, with most replacements running $340-$680 installed depending on flue size and whether your crown needs resealing. Our trucks carry the common 8″×13″, 13″×13″, and 13″×17″ galvanized and stainless models, so we can usually match your existing cap the same day you call. Most Northport homeowners realize their cap has failed after spotting rust streaks down the brick or hearing animals scratching above the fireplace during our cold, wet winters.

Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Copperfield chimney caps fall into a few distinct series, and getting the right match matters more than you’d think. The Multi-Flue line covers larger chimney tops with two or more flues, while Single-Flue models clamp or screw directly to the tile liner. We also see the Draft-Increasing series on older Northport homes where downdraft has been a chronic problem, especially the houses up on the bluffs near Eatons Neck catching that harbor wind.

To identify yours, check the stamped label on the cap’s skirt or the underside of the lid. If the label’s rusted away, measure the flue tile outside dimensions and note whether your cap mounts with set screws, a clamp band, or a skirt that wraps the crown. Copperfield’s OEM stainless caps carry a lifetime warranty, but their galvanized line only goes 7-10 years in Suffolk County’s salt air. We also source quality aftermarket equivalents from Gelco and Famco when the original series has been discontinued, which happens more than Copperfield’s marketing suggests. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Copperfield, so we match the part to your chimney, not the catalog to a commission.

Signs Your Copperfield Chimney Cap Is Failing

  • Rust stains bleeding down the brickwork. Galvanized caps in Northport’s coastal climate typically show surface rust by year six or seven. Once the zinc coating fails, the steel underneath accelerates, and those orange streaks mean water is already getting past the cap and into your flue.
  • Mesh sides clogged with creosote or pulled away from the frame. Copperfield’s spark arrestor mesh is 5/8″ or 3/4″ weave, depending on the series. When it cakes solid or separates at the solder joints, your draft suffers and ember protection disappears.
  • The cap sits crooked or lifts in wind. This usually means the mounting hardware has corroded or the crown wash beneath it has eroded. A cap flapping loose on a Northport nor’easter will either vanish into your neighbor’s yard or take a section of flue tile with it.
  • Water in the firebox or damp odors after rain. If your Copperfield cap’s lid has dented or the overlap with the skirt has narrowed, water tracks directly down the flue. In older Northport colonials with unlined chimneys, that moisture hits the smoke chamber and soaks into adjacent framing.
  • Squirrel or bird noise above the damper. A failed mesh side, missing cap, or gap where the skirt meets the crown is an open invitation. We’ve pulled nests from flues in the Fort Salonga section where the homeowner swore the cap was “fine last fall.”

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range
Single-flue galvanized cap, standard size $340-$420
Single-flue stainless cap, lifetime warranty $480-$580
Multi-flue cap, stainless $560-$680
Crown resealing (when needed) $180-$260 additional

What drives the range: flue size, whether we need a custom skirt extension for an oversized crown, and the condition of the crown wash underneath. We don’t bury crown work in the cap price. If your crown’s sound, you pay for the cap and installation. If it’s cracked or pitched wrong, we’ll show you the photo and quote the reseal separately. Every cap installation includes new mounting hardware, a bead of flexible crown sealant at the skirt interface, and our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s no high-tension danger in a chimney cap, but there’s plenty of ways to do it wrong. An owner can safely check from the ground with binoculars for obvious rust, missing mesh, or tilt. You can also measure your flue tile from inside the firebox to get the right size range.

Where DIY goes wrong: walking a Northport roof with Suffolk County’s moss and dew, setting screws into crumbly flue tile, or installing a cap that looks right but blocks half your draft because the mesh is too fine for your fireplace’s air demand. We’ve also seen homeowners seal the skirt to the crown with the wrong caulk, trapping moisture underneath and accelerating crown failure. If the chimney’s doing its job, you won’t think about it. My goal is to keep it that way. For a cap match and install that’s done right - and we stand behind it - call us at (631) 528-2501.
