Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Northport Owner’s Guide

To identify your cap, look for a stamped model letter on the underside of the lid or a small Gelco tag on one of the legs. Measure your flue tile outside dimensions if the tag is gone. The Model C fits flue tiles from 8″ x 8″ up to 13″ x 13″; the Model A multi-flue covers need at least 5″ of flat crown surface on all sides for the legs to seat properly. • Rust stains running down the chimney face. Gelco galvanized caps begin showing surface rust at the weld points after 8 to 12 years in Northport’s climate. Once rust breaches the seam, water follows. We see this most often on north-facing chimneys where the cap stays damp.
• Water in the firebox or a musty smell after rain. The cap’s mesh screen or lid has separated from the frame, or the storm collar has lifted. Sometimes the cap is intact but was never properly flashed to the flue tile, a shortcut we find on older installations.
• Animals or nesting debris visible from below. The mesh sides of a Gelco cap are 5/8″ woven stainless. Squirrels can bend weakened mesh, and raccoons will pry at loose corners. A cap that once kept them out becomes an entry point once the frame fatigues.
• The cap is tilting, missing, or rattling in wind. Clamp-mount Model C caps rely on tension screws gripping the flue tile. Freeze-thaw cycles in Northport winters loosen these over time. A tilted cap channels water directly into the flue instead of away from it.

An owner can safely check whether the cap is loose, measure flue dimensions from inside the fireplace with a flashlight, and look for rust or animal damage from the ground with binoculars. What we don’t recommend: climbing a roof to wrestle with a corroded clamp, guessing at crown slope, or installing a cap without inspecting the flue beneath it.
